Eunji Yoon, MM

Eunji Yoon began her musical studies at age five on the piano, and began studying cello at age 11. Her principal teachers were Yoonjeong-Boo, Hae-eun Kim, Karine Georgian, Leonard Elschenbroich and Alan Harris.

After graduation from Korea’s Kaywon High School of Arts in South Korea, Yoon pursued advanced musical studies at the Royal Northern College of Music in England. Under Karine Georgian’s guidance Yoon focused her cello studies on the natural handwork and grasp the feeling for its acoustic possibilities. She then acquired her Master’s Degree at the Eastman School of Music, where she studied under Alan Harris. His influence and teaching pushed Yoon to master playing highlights with high intensity and technical mastery.

Cellist Eunji Yoon’s first public appearance, at age 16, was at Ewon Art Centre in Seoul where she performed “Dvorak Cello Concerto.” Yoon demonstrated her talent by placing in competitions such as the Brahms Competition (2nd prize), a competition held by Classical Music Magazine (3rd prize), and the Strad (2nd prize).

She has performed in master classes with renowned teachers and performers such as Miklos Perenyi, Gary Hoffman, Sung-won Yang, Hannah Robert, Ulf Tischbirek and Jens Peter Maintz. Yoon has participated in festivals including Euro Arts, Hannah Robert Summer Master class, Karine Georgian Summer Master class, Absolute Classics Festival, and Prague Summer Nights Festival. As a teaching artist, Yoon frequently plays solo recitals, outreach concerts, and chamber concerts.

As an entrepreneur, she has attended many workshops to broaden her musicianship and teaching. Her experience includes a workshop with Eugene Friesen from ASTA conference, Beyond Cello from London Cello Society, and a work opportunity with BBC Philharmonic Learning and Participant Department.

As a teaching artist of 2017-18, she taught a general music to grades 1-12, besides tutoring cello and directing a choir. During her study at Eastman School of Music, she gave secondary cello lessons to non-major collegiate students as a teaching assistant of Kathleen Kemp, an assistant principal cellist in Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra.

Eunji Yoon’s involvement at church brought her first interactive exposure to music at age 5 and began studying piano at age 5. She was served her church’s choir as a singer and accompanist. Along with cello study, she had continuously developed her accompaniment skills and had worked as a piano accompanist over 5 years at Didsbury United Reformed Church, and Rochester Korean Presbyterian church.
