Violin, Viola, and Piano Lessons

Christen Hooks, MM

Christen teaches violin, viola and piano and has over six years of teaching experience. She recently graduated with her Master’s in viola performance from the Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore, Maryland, where she studied with CJ Chang, principal violist of the Philadelphia Orchestra. Prior to getting her Master’s, she studied with the associate principal violist of the orchestra, Kerri Ryan. In addition to playing professionally in both the Baltimore and Philadelphia areas, she currently maintains a teaching studio of violin, viola and piano students also in both locations.

Christen began her studies on piano at the age of 5. After starting viola at age 10, she quickly grew to love the instrument. She studied with respected pedagogue, Byrnina Socolofsky and also at the Settlement School of Music in Philadelphia. She continued her studies at New York University where she enjoyed not only playing with the orchestras at NYU but also the New York Youth Symphony and several New Music groups.

Christen finished her undergraduate studies on a full music scholarship at Rowan University where she completed both a business degree in marketing and a BA in Music. After graduating from Rowan, she played in a quartet in Philadelphia while also actively participating in the rock/alternative music scene in the city. She collaborated and recorded with many bands and artists during this time. Some of the artists she worked with include rapper Lushlife and internationally-recognized jazz singer, Alita Moses.

While at Peabody, Christen had the chance to take a piano pedagogy class with the co-director of the Peabody Preparatory piano program. Peabody’s piano program is consistently ranked in the top three in the entire country.
